Persuasive Copywriting: Copy that Sells
Oct 03, 2007
What is persuasive copywriting?
If you are one among the few who are wondering what this persuasive copywriting is all about, you have just about landed in the right place. A persuasive copy attracts people and makes them respond to it. It is for this reason that it's also referred to as direct response copy.

Copywriting is perhaps the most important aspect of a website. A well written copy makes the website interesting, attracts visitors, and above all, brings in revenue. The main difference between general copywriting and direct response or persuasive copywriting is that the former just explains the products or services offered by a particular company, while the latter persuades the visitors to use the services and or the products offered.

How does persuasive copywriting help?
Most companies are under a misconception that people visit their websites because they like them. The answer is a strict 'no'. They don't visit your website to appreciate your design, admire your copy, or to contribute to your charity program. They come looking for something which they can use. So, unless you persuade your visitors that you have something that they are looking for, chances are that they will skip your site in a heart's beat.

Personally, we have seen a few websites where the products/services offered were really good, but still they got poor response from visitors just because the copy was not persuasive in its tone. A persuasive copy should attract the viewer, make him read it, and then make him respond to it.

What about the headline?
In the world of copywriting, a well written headline is half the job done. The headline should attract the viewer and more importantly, the content should keep him glued. Once he is convinced that the service/product offered is good, chances are that more often than not he will avail of the service, or purchase the product.

One last word . . .
Lastly, one common mistake that copywriters make while writing persuasive copy is that they go over the top and end up irritating the visitors. Do not overemphasize on things as it will only make your visitor wary. Persuasive copywriting is not about ramming your product down the visitors' throat; rather it's about tempting him to try it once.
